George Simons sketches, c.1853-1898.

Facsimile copies of sketches made by George Simons, mainly in the areas around his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Sketches include Mormon emigrants in Nebraska and Iowa, Indian villages in Iowa, saw mills and churches in Iowa, and the various residences of the Dodge family, particularly Nathan P. Dodge and Grenville Mellen Dodge. Also included are several facsimile photographs (mainly of the Dodges and their homes) and newspaper articles.

Grenville M. Dodge of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was a Civil War general; prominent national railroad surveyor and engineer; and U.S. Representative. Dodge conducted surveys for the Illinois Central, Rock Island (Mississippi to Missouri line), and the Union Pacific railroads before the Civil War. He was commissioned as Colonel with the 4th Iowa Volunteer Infantry in 1861 and promoted to Brigadier General of the United States Volunteers in 1862 and then Major General in 1864. George Simons was born on January 22, 1834, and grew up in Streeter, Illinois. In 1853 he arrived in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with Grenville Mellen Dodge's railroad surveying crew, and remained in Council Bluffs almost continuously for the next 56 years. In Council Bluffs Simons worked as a portrait painter and occasionally as a locksmith and gunsmith.
